Hall of Famer dies at 81

By Dan Murphy

Executive Director, Meat Industry Hall of Fame

A legend has left us.

Jimmy Dean, the quintessential American storyteller, actor, songwriter, TV personality—and of course, meat industry entrepreneur—died peacefully at his Richmond, Va.-area home last Sunday.

Jimmy_DeanHe left us way too soon. Before he’d had a chance to attend his own induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in October, an honor long overdue for one of the original voices of the genre, a Grammy Award winner and the man who introduced America to such country music stars as Patsy Cline, Roy Clark and Roger Williams during his years as host of television variety shows on both ABC and CBS.

The Country Music Association has named Jimmy Dean, a Charter Member of the Meat Industry Hall of Fame and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter-entertainer, the newest member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Also named to the Hall were recording artists Ferlin Husky, whose signature song, “Wings of a Dove,” became a No. 1 smash; Don Williams, The Gentle Giant, who racked up 17 No. 1 country hits; and songwriter-producer Billy Sherrill, best known for co-writing Tammy Wynette’s blockbuster hit, “Stand By Your Man.”

Contacted with the news, Dean humorously said, “I thought I was already in there. [But] seriously, it brought a huge grin to my face. I am honored.”

The Hall of Fame Keynote Speech

Bill Kurtis takes audience on a journey through industry history

The keynote speaker at the Meat Industry Hall of Fame Inaugural Induction Ceremony in Chicago on Oct. 27, when 21 leaders of the industry were honored, was broadcaster and television journalist Bill Kurtis. In a dynamic 30-minute speech, he summarized more than a century of industry history. Kurtis suggested that we pause to appreciate what the giants of the meat industry have achieved, noting that the location—Chicago’s Union League Club, was organized to elect Ulysses S. Grant as president.

bill_kurtis_thumbnailHe talked about the unique tasks that faced fellow Illinoisian Abe Lincoln upon taking office in 1861, when he learned that half the country did not merely dislike him, but were going to form their own country. Using Grant as a yardstick, he noted three things we can learn about success—Timing, Preparation, and Vision, followed by execution. These are qualities he said every one of the Members of the Meat Industry Hall of Fame has displayed!

Kurtis traced the history of beef in America to what he called “the real start” immediately after the Civil War, and it was always connected to Chicago. Here is a transcript of his remarks:
